Melissa - junk drawer black and white

This is another beach-combing pile. These are sandstones with holes in them. I thought the one in the front looked like it was trying to say something.

  1. You have the coolest junk and collections. I love the way the light plays over the rocks and the deep shadows it causes.

  2. The hard edged shadows created by the bright light contrasts with the softness of the stones and adds visual interest and tension. I like how the light shines through the little openings and creates 3-D space. The light also sculpts the stones emphasizing their forms.

I may have used a small reflector to bounce just a 'tiny' amount of soft light into the left side where the gray values are similar, to open up the area and create greater value contrast seen in the rest of the image.

Did you try a shot using a smaller aperture so every stone was in focus? Tripod? :-)

Would like to see the color/BW images side by side.
